Battery energy storage (often shortened to BESS) has become one of the fastest-scaling grid assets because it can shift electricity to higher-value hours, provide fast frequency support, and reduce curtailment of wind and solar. The most important metrics to track are power (GW), energy (GWh), duration (hours), and cost ($/kWh).

Battery Storage Statistics (Top Highlights)
- Global utility-scale battery additions (power): 63 GW added in 2024, bringing total installed utility-scale capacity to 124 GW.
- Global battery storage installed in 2024 (all segments): 69 GW installed in 2024 (Ember), nearly doubling the prior total of 86 GW in 2023.
- Global lithium-ion battery pack price: $115/kWh (2024 global average) and $108/kWh (2025 global average).
- Stationary storage pack price: $70/kWh in 2025, reported as 45% lower than 2024.
- U.S. utility-scale additions: 10.3 GW added in 2024, 15 GW added in 2025, and 24 GW planned for 2026.
- EU battery deployments (energy): 27.1 GWh installed in 2025 (+45% YoY), reaching 77.3 GWh total installed capacity.
- Utility-scale vs behind-the-meter (global, 2023): 40+ GW added, split roughly 65% utility-scale and 35% behind-the-meter.
Global Battery Storage Growth
Global deployment accelerated as costs fell and power markets increasingly paid for flexibility. In 2024, utility-scale battery storage additions hit 63 GW and total installed utility-scale capacity reached 124 GW. The same analysis notes battery storage project costs fell about 40% in 2024 to around $150/kWh.

Battery Cost and Price Trends
Falling battery prices are a major tailwind for deployment. BloombergNEF reports the global average lithium-ion battery pack price fell to $115/kWh in 2024 and to $108/kWh in 2025. The same 2025 survey notes stationary storage pack pricing fell to $70/kWh in 2025 (reported as 45% lower than 2024), highlighting how competition and chemistry shifts are pushing storage costs down.

U.S. Battery Storage Deployment
The United States remains a top storage market. The EIA reported 10.3 GW of new battery storage capacity was added in 2024. A later EIA update reported a record 15 GW was added in 2025, and developers plan to add 24 GW of utility-scale battery storage in 2026.

Europe Battery Storage Deployment
European deployment also accelerated. One widely cited industry estimate reported EU battery installations reached 27.1 GWh in 2025 (up 45% year over year), bringing total installed EU battery capacity to 77.3 GWh. The same estimate framed a much larger need by 2030 (on the order of hundreds of GWh) as renewables penetration rises.
China and Other Major Markets
China has become the largest battery storage market in annual additions and cumulative capacity. One major IEA update reported China added about 42 GW (101 GWh) of “new-type energy storage” in 2024 and about 66 GW (189 GWh) in 2025, bringing cumulative capacity to roughly 145 GW by end-2025. The same update noted standalone storage accounted for 58% of cumulative installations by end-2025.
Utility-Scale vs Behind-the-Meter (BTM)
Battery storage is deployed both on the grid and behind customer meters (homes, businesses, and industrial sites). In the power sector, one IEA update reported 40+ GW was added globally in 2023, split about 65% utility-scale and 35% behind-the-meter. This split matters because BTM adoption is driven more by retail tariffs, resilience, and demand charges, while utility-scale economics are driven by wholesale price spreads and grid services.
